Fairfield Municipal Judge Joyce A. Campbell was recently elected to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) board of directors.
NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
“Early on as a judge, I recognized the need for diversion for those living with mental illness to be treated differently than others in the criminal justice system,” Judge Campbell said. “Those suffering from mental illness need appropriate treatment. I am profoundly humbled and grateful to have this opportunity to assist those affected by mental illness.”
Judge Campbell already sits on the NAMI Ohio board of directors, and presided over a mental health docket in the city of Fairfield since 2001.
NAMI started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 and has blossomed into the nation’s leading voice on mental health. Today, the association includes hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations, and volunteers working in communities to raise awareness and provide support and education that wasn’t previously available to those in need.
Judge Campbell was elected to a three-year term during a convention in New Orleans, and may serve two consecutive terms.
Approximately one in five Americans is affected by mental illness each year.
