Three judges from district appeals courts throughout the state today served as visiting judges on the Ohio Supreme Court for oral arguments.
Eleventh District Court of Appeals Judge Mary Jane Trapp sat in for Justice Michael P. Donnelly, who recused himself from Disciplinary Counsel v. Carol B. Adelstein, Case no. 2019-0801. The case involves whether a Cleveland attorney can get a stayed suspension for violating attorney conduct rules involving client trust accounts.
Judge Trapp also sat in for Justice Judith L. French, who recused herself from State of Ohio v. Andre D. Harper, Case no. 2018-1144. The case involves whether a 2017 Supreme Court decision about postrelease control sentencing applies to earlier cases.
Judge Trapp hasn’t served as a visiting judge since 2008.
“I love it,” Judge Trapp said. “I spent a good deal of my professional life in this building. My first real legal job in law was working as a summer intern in the Supreme Court law library.”
Judge Trapp returned to the Eleventh District in February 2019 after taking a sabbatical from the bench. She served six years as a judge on the same appellate court from 2007 to 2013.
She graduated from Mount Holyoke College and received her law degree from Case Western Reserve.
Twelfth District Court of Appeals Judge Robert A. Hendrickson sat in for Justice Melody J. Stewart, who recused herself from State of Ohio ex rel. Elliot G. Feltner v. Cuyahoga County, Ohio Board of Revision et al., Case no. 2018-1307. The case involves whether it’s constitutional to grant power to a county board of revision to foreclose on a property.
This is Judge Hendrickson’s first time sitting for oral arguments.
“You always want to see the process and how it’s done,” Judge Hendrickson said. “The trial courts always want to know how we, in the court of appeals, process the cases that come through. Today, it was very interesting to see how it operates on the highest level.”
Judge Hendrickson was elected to the court in November 2008. He took office in 2009 and was re-elected in 2014. His father served on the same appellate court.
Judge Hendrickson graduated from the University of Cincinnati and received his law degree from Capital University.
Eleventh District Court of Appeals Judge Timothy P. Cannon sat in for Justice Melody J. Stewart, who recused herself from Disciplinary Counsel v. Carol B. Adelstein, Case no. 2019-0801.
Judge Cannon last sat for oral argument in February 2017.
“It’s very rewarding,” Judge Cannon said. “It’s very nice to come and participate in the process at the highest level of our legal system in Ohio.”
Judge Cannon was appointed to the appellate court in 2007 and was elected to his first full term in 2008. He was re-elected in 2014.
He graduated from John Carroll University and received his law degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.
