Two judges from district appeals courts throughout the state today served as visiting judges on the Ohio Supreme Court for oral arguments.

Ninth District Court of Appeals Judge Donna J. Carr sat in for Justice Judith L. French, who recused herself from Ohio Department of Job and Family Services v. Delphi Automotive Systems LLC,  Case no. 2017-0553. The case involves whether a new owner of an auto parts maker qualifies for a reduced unemployment tax rate.

“This was a case I found very interesting,” Judge Carr said. “I’m humbled to be able to come down here and work with the other justices on these cases that mean so much to so many people.”

Judge Carr was elected to the Ninth District in November 1998. She was re-elected in 2004 and 2010. She also served as a judge on the Akron Municipal Court and an assistant prosecutor in Summit County.

Judge Carr graduated from Kent State University and received her law degree from the University of Akron School of Law.

Tenth District Court of Appeals Judge Lisa L. Sadler also served as a visiting judge on the Court today.

Judge Sadler sat for Justice Melody J. Stewart, who recused herself from State of Ohio v. Sharon D. Fips, Case no. 2018-1778. The case involves whether an appeals court properly reduced an assault conviction to disorderly conduct.

“I always look forward to serving as a visiting judge,” Judge Sadler said. “I think it’s truly an honor to be here.”

Since July 2003, Judge Sadler has served on the Tenth District. Previously, she served on the Franklin County Common Pleas Court and the Franklin County Municipal Court.

Her legal career also includes service as deputy chief legal counsel to the late Gov. George Voinovich and as Columbus assistant city attorney. Judge Sadler earned her law degree in 1984 from Capital University Law School and was admitted to the Ohio bar the same year.
