Hello Cleveland: Justices Take Their Show on the Road

The Ohio Supreme Court held back-to-back sessions in Cleveland on September 25 and 26 during its biannual Off-Site Court program. This was the 64th time in 25 years that the Supreme Court has held oral arguments on the road since the program was created in 1987, and it is the third time the court took the program to Cleveland. This slide show shares images from the two sessions, which were held at Case Western Reserve University Law School and the Cuyahoga County Courthouse.

The justices share a lighter moment at a special morning “news conference” with Case faculty and students and area high school students. Pictured from left to right: Justice Robert R. Cupp, Justice Terrence O'Donnell, Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger, Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor, Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, Justice Yvette McGee Brown, and Justice Paul E. Pfeifer.
The bench at the Case law school Moot Courtroom had to be modified to accommodate the seven justices. Pictured from left to right: Justice Robert R. Cupp, Justice Terrence O'Donnell, Justice Paul E. Pfeifer, Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor, Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger, and Justice Yvette McGee Brown.

The justices hold the morning news conference with students on day two in the Courtroom of the Eighth District Court of Appeals in the historic Cuyahoga County Courthouse, which this year celebrates its centennial.
St. Edwards High School senior Derek Moomaw asks the justices a question.
Chief Justice O’Connor answers a question from one of the students as her colleagues look on.
Shaw High School junior Shaquille Tyson poses a question.
Carley J. Ingram, chief of the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office Appellate Division, argues before the justices in State of Ohio v. Damaad S. Gardner.
Only eight women have ever served on the Ohio Supreme Court in its 209-year history. Four of them are pictured here under the historic phrase “This is a Government of Law Not of Men.” Left to right: Justice McGee Brown, Chief Justice O’Connor, Justice Lanzinger and Justice Lundberg Stratton. This photo was shot in the Eighth District Courtroom just after Justice Stratton heard her last oral argument in 16 years on the Supreme Court bench. She will retire at the end of 2012.
