My Summer of Learning at the Supreme Court

I’m Emily Stokes, an Ohio University journalism and political science student, and summer extern at the Supreme Court of Ohio. It was truly a transformative experience, a unique opportunity to explore and gain a deeper understanding of Ohio’s judiciary. I am glad I took a leap in applying for a reach opportunity!
The 2024 summer class of externs boasted both legal and non-legal students from Ohio and beyond, each with excitement to learn and connect with one another. Meeting people throughout the Court and sharing a friendly hello made the experience all that more enjoyable.
One of the most helpful things this summer was going into each day with an eagerness to try something new and a readiness to work hard. I allowed myself to explore skills and tasks without worrying about failure, a willingness to be challenged and grow. I asked questions, a lot of them, that opened new doors to areas of interest and exploration. Although it may seem cliché, sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know.
Being in the heart of Columbus is another joy of working as an extern, in a most beautiful and historic building. If you haven’t, take the time to explore the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center and surrounding downtown area.
Walking away from my time at the Court, I have a better understanding of the judicial system, a portfolio of quality and impactful work, not to mention new friends and a growing network.
The Supreme Court of Ohio works diligently behind the scenes to keep the wheels of justice turning, a reflection of a strong and committed judiciary working for the people.
I was able to contribute to that mission of access to justice and sharing the critical role of the judicial system. I’m leaving as a better writer, researcher, and communicator - and excited to take what I’ve learned back to campus and beyond.
