Seats of Justice: Athens County
The next stop along the journey through Ohio’s county courthouses takes viewers to the southeastern county of Athens.
The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 made it possible for the establishment of Athens County in 1805. The Athens County Courthouse has evolved from its original rented room in the Bingham House, with the current courthouse being the third in the county’s history. The courthouse features the bicentennial bell, the clock tower of Athens City Hall from the early 20th century, and walls lined with historic portraits.
