Each year on Sept. 17, Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787, a defining moment in American history that established the framework of our national government and the rule of law. The Supreme Court of Ohio is marking the occasion by inviting visitors to explore Ohio’s Foundational Documents, an exhibit that examines the documents that shaped both our nation and our state.

Located in the Visitor Education Center in the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center, the exhibit features five landmark documents: the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the U.S. Constitution, the Northwest Ordinance, and the Ohio Constitution. Together, they tell the story of America’s founding principles and Ohio’s evolution from frontier territory to statehood.

At the heart of the Supreme Court exhibit is the U.S. Constitution, the document that created the three branches of government and established a system of checks and balances that continues to guide the nation today. Article III created the federal judicial branch, reinforcing the principle that laws should be interpreted and applied fairly and independently. The Constitution’s structure and principles would later influence state Constitutions across the country, including Ohio’s.

Constitution Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the enduring importance of civic knowledge and the institutions that protect our democratic system. Through Ohio’s Foundational Documents, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the ideas, laws, and governing structures that continue to shape our courts, communities, and country.
