Seats of Justice: Medina County
As Medina County grew throughout Ohio history, its courthouse evolved with it. Changes to the building highlighted a variety of architectural styles, each representing the county’s commitment to preserving its heritage while allowing for rapid growth.
The county’s original courthouse was built in 1821 in a public square central to Medina. By 1840, the population had grown from approximately 3,000 to more than 18,000, and the county needed a larger facility. A new courthouse reflecting the classic Greek revival style popular throughout the 19th century was built one block east in 1841.
In 1873, wings were added to both sides of the building to accommodate additional court proceedings. By 1897, features including a covered balcony, clock tower, flagstaff, ornamental stone posts, and chandeliers were added to make the courthouse distinct. Further expansions in 1906, 1933, and 1951 each grew the building in a unique way.
“If you look closely at the building, you can see how it has changed over the years,” said Norman E. Brague, former Wadsworth city director of law.
In the 1960s, the Ohio General Assembly authorized a second judge for the Medina County Common Pleas Court. Because the courthouse lacked sufficient space, plans were proposed to demolish the historic courthouse and build a new one. However, the proposal met immediate pushback from members of the community.
“Medina has always had a real sense of its place in history, so the historic courthouse was saved,” said Roger B. Smalley, member of the Medina County Historical Society.
In January 1969, an annex was constructed on the south side of the courthouse, allowing the original building to remain functional at the center of the county square.
Today, the courthouse and its annex stand as a striking blend of architectural styles, showcasing Medina County’s growth while preserving an important piece of history.
